Why use OpenUSD
HTML is the standard format for representing webpages, OpenUSD is the same but for representing 3D content. OpenUSD serves as both a file format and a framework, facilitating better interoperability among various digital content creation (DCC) tools compared to any existing format. This advancement leads to increased efficiency and speed in workflows.
Initially developed, and open sourced in 2016, by Pixar for the film industry, OpenUSD plays a critical role in the film industry by enabling the representation and sharing of complex and intricate scenes across different DCC tools and among artists. Its robust format and framework can comprehensively describe entire scenes including cameras, assets, lighting, simulation data, and AI training data, making it an ideal choice for constructing digital 3d content, not just for film but also for gaming, manufacturing, AI, archviz, or social digital platforms like the Metaverse.
OpenUSD has since been embraced by many other industries than just the film industry and therefore AOUSD was founded to help curate an OpenUSD standard. To give an example of the diverse industry impact it has had, we can look at who founded AOUSD; The founders of AOUSD are Pixar, Adobe, Autodesk, Apple and NVIDIA. Many other industry players have since joined the Alliance for OpenUSD to collectively define the industry standard for utilizing OpenUSD in the evolving digital 3D landscape. About Hugin Studios
Hugin Studios started in 2023 to help spread the knowledge of OpenUSD and have from the start collaborated with several reputable companies.
Hugin comes from the North mythology and is one of Odin’s Ravens. Odin was the wisest of the North Gods and was always thirsty for more knowledge. Each day Odin sent out two Ravens, Hugin and Munin, to gather information about the world and at dinner time come back and tell him what they had seen. Hugin and Munin symbolize Odin's mind and Hugin is seen as the “Thought” and Munin his “Memory” and each day he worries that they would never return, especially Munin.
At Hugin Studios, as we assist our clients, we also gain knowledge around the world much like Odin’s ravens, and bring information learnt back to Hugin Studios to collectively learn and be able to serve all our clients more effectively.
